About Ledger
Do the math first. Then decide.
Personal finance for US households: emergency funds, index funds, fees and mortgages. No forecasts and no hype — just the arithmetic and the tradeoffs behind it.
What this site is
Ledger is the Money site of the OMC knowledge network,
published at finance.omc.center. It shares the network's technical
platform and editorial standards, but its topics, bylines and publishing schedule are its
own.
It is written for readers without a professional background. That shapes every piece: we would rather leave a question unanswered than publish something we cannot explain properly, and wherever a judgment is possible we give the criteria, not just the conclusion.
Practical advice here is anchored to the United States. Where an answer depends on which state you are in, the article says so instead of quietly picking one.
Editorial standards
- State the preconditions first. The same question has different answers under different circumstances, so the circumstances matter more than a confident conclusion.
- Separate fact from opinion. Statutes, policy terms and published figures are facts and must be traceable; rules of thumb are labeled as judgments.
- Show the date. Rules in money change. Articles carry published and updated dates, and older pieces are revised first when the rules move.
- Do not replace professional advice. For an individual case we offer a framework for understanding the problem; the decision belongs with a licensed professional.
How articles get made
Articles on this network start as AI-assisted drafts, are reviewed and edited by a human editor, and are revised as the underlying facts change. If you find an error, report it and we will correct it.
We do not think this needs hiding. AI builds the structure, writes the general background and takes on the repetitive work; an editor verifies the facts, adds the practical detail and decides what is worth publishing at all. Anything involving statutes, policy language or figures is settled by human review.
Updates and corrections
This site currently holds 5 articles across 4 topics. Articles may be revised after publication, and revisions update the date shown at the top. When a piece's underlying premise no longer holds, we rewrite it rather than patching it.
If you spot a factual error, an out-of-date rule or an imprecise claim, report it through the hub — once verified we will correct it and note the change at the foot of the article.
